The federal holiday was first signed into law in 1968 through the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The holiday was created to co-honor former President George Washington whose birthday is February 22, 1732, and whom was the country’s first leader, in addition to, former President Abraham Lincoln, the country’s 16th President and whose birthday is February 12, 1809.
