The federal holiday was first signed into law by former President Ronald Reagan on November 2, 1983, and the holiday was first observed on January 20, 1986. On this day, a trend has emerged where Americans and advocates across the country engage in a day of service, dialogue and honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
